Scarlett Johansson Signs On to Star in DreamWorks’ ‘Ghost in the Shell’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Following the success of “Lucy,” Scarlett Johansson looks ready to take on another action pic, this one coming from the world of Japanese anime.

Johansson is set to star in DreamWorks’ adaptation of the popular anime pic “Ghost in the Shell.” Deadline Hollywood had reported that the actress had the offer to star but at the time she was still undecided about taking the role. Sources now say she has agreed to star in the pic.

The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Rupert Sanders is on board to direct. Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing the film from a script by Bill Wheeler. Mark Sourian is exec producing.

Insiders also tell Variety that Paramount has the option to come on as co-producer and financier and that decision is expected in the coming weeks.

DreamWorks principal Steven Spielberg is a huge fan of the original and has long wanted to get this film off the ground. A commitment from a star like Johansson should help in getting the pic greenlit for production.

Besides Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lawrence, Johansson is becoming one of the few actresses in town with the clout to get a project greenlit on her name alone.

“Lucy” made $394 million worldwide and Johansson can be seen next in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” bowing in May. Johansson has also done a nice job of balancing action-heavy tentpoles with serious dramas and comedies.

She received rave reviews for Spike Jonze’s “Her” and is a part of the ensemble of the Coen brothers’ next pic “Hail, Caesar!” She is repped by CAA and LBI Entertainment.

Los fans del manga en pie de guerra

Los fans del aclamado manga Ghost in the Shell no quieren que Scarlett Johansson protagonice el remake americano que trasladará a la gran pantalla Rupert Sanders, según ha publicado este miércoles ComicBook.
De hecho los fanáticos de este thriller futurista de espionaje están recogiendo firmas a través de la página 2carepetitions para que la actriz sea reeemplaza, una petición que ha superado ya las 32.000 firmas. En concreto, no entienden por qué Dreamworks ha escogido a una actriz occidental para meterse en la piel de la protagonista asiática Motoko Kusanagi.

"La película se desarrolla en Japón y sus personajes son japoneses. ¿Por qué el remake americano está protagonizado por una actriz blanca?", comentan en la web, donde también muestran su indignación con Hollywood. "La industria americana es hostil con los actores asiáticos, a quienes excluyen de papeles en las grandes películas. Una encuesta reciente registró que en 2013 los personajes asiáticos representaban solo el 4,4% de los papeles importantes de Hollywood".

La adaptación cinematográfica del manga de ciencia ficción seguirá la historia de la agente especial y cyborg Motoko Kusanagi, responsable de las operaciones encubiertas de la Comisión Nacional de Seguridad japonesa, cuya misión consiste en luchar contra los delitos tecnológicos.

Ghost in the Shell, trilogía manga creada por Masamune Shirow, ha sido adaptada hasta en tres ocasiones al cine de ánime. Pero no solo eso. La historia de espionaje futurista ha sido trasladada a la pequeña pantalla con una serie de televisión de dos temporadas y ha logrado hacerse un hueco en el universo gamer con tres videojuegos.

Pilou Asbæk será Batou

Tal y como informa Variety, la película de DreamWorks Pictures, 'Ghost in the Shell' ha añadido a Pilou Asbæk ('The Borgias') para interpretar al protagonista masculino, Batou. Se trata de uno de los mejores luchadores de la Sección 9 y el tercero al mando tras Aramaki y la mayor Motoko Kusanagi.

Desde Deadline informan que el actor protagonista de 'Maléfica' y la futura 'Orgullo y prejuicio y zombies', Sam Riley está negociando su participación en la película de acción real, 'Ghost in the Shell'.

Michael Pitt será El hombre que ríe

Michael Pitt ('Hannibal', 'Boardwalk Empire') se ha unido al elenco de la adaptación en acción real del manga creado por Masamune Shirow en 1989, 'Ghost in the Shell'. Según informa The Hollywood Reporter, el actor interpretará al villano del film, un pirata informático conocido como El hombre que ríe.

Famed filmmaker, actor, and comedian Beat Takeshi is joining the cast of the Hollywood Ghost in the Shell movie. You know, the one that is starring Scarlett Johansson and some other white people.

According to Variety, “The story follows the exploits of a female member of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission’s covert ops unit (Johansson), which specializes in fighting technology-related crime.” Uh... So, Johansson is playing Major Motoko Kusanagi, a Japanese cyborg? Or, maybe, they can make her an American cyborg for the Japanese government? For this Hollywood movie? This is all quite odd.

But! Finally, the filmmakers have signed a real Japanese actor to join the production—and a great one at that. Oricon and Cinema Today report that Beat Takeshi will play the chief of Public Security Section 9, Daisuke Aramaki. “It’s not that I’m a fan of anime or manga,” Takeshi is quoted as saying (which, hey, is okay!).

“I decided to take the role because even though this stylish piece of entertainment is totally different from the films I’ve directed, I thought it was interesting that Aramaki, the role I play, is a character who gives off a peculiar vibe and, in various episodes, is set at the core of the characters’ relationships. I’m looking forward to see how the movie turns out.”

The live-action Hollywood Ghost in the Shell is slated for a 2017 release. This is Beat Takeshi’s first Hollywood film since 1995's Johnny Mnemonic.

“Boardwalk Empire” actor Michael Pitt is in talks to play the villain opposite Scarlett Johansson in DreamWorks’ “Ghost in the Shell.”

Rupert Sanders (“Snow White and the Huntsman”) is directing the adaptation of the popular anime film, with Paramount on board to co-finance.

Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing, while Michael Costigan, Jeffrey Silver, Tetsu Fujimura and Mitsuhisa Ishikawa are exec producing.

The story follows the exploits of a female member of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission’s covert ops unit (Johansson), which specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Pitt is in talks to play Laughing man, who proves to be the ultimate hacker, capable of such feats as hijacking multiple video streams simultaneously, taking over someone’s cybernetic brain entirely and editing his own images out of someone’s cybernetic eyes, and all in real time.

“Borgen” alum Pilou Asbæk recently joined the cast as well. The film hits theaters on March 31, 2017 with Paramount handling worldwide distribution.

Pitt just signed on to star with Imogen Poots in the indie art thriller “The Sleeping Shepherd” and is part of the ensemble cast of “Criminal,” which also stars Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Costner, Gal Gadot and Gary Oldman.

He is repped by CAA, LBI Entertainment and Schreck Rose. The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news.

Después de tantas idas y venidas, Scarlett Johansson ha comenzado a rodar para Ghost in the Shell, el filme basado en el manga de Shiro Masamune. Un poco aparte tendrá que dejar la promoción de Civil War para meterse en el papel de Kusanagi, como vemos en esta primera imagen del filme.

Tras el baile de productoras, finalmente será Paramount Pictures quien se encargue de la adaptación, guionizada por Jamie Moss y Jonathan Herman y dirigida por Rupert Sanders.

Based on the popular manga of the same name, the movie follows Kusanagi, a cyborg that is a part of an elite cybercrime-fighting task force known as Section 9.

Snow White and the Huntsman helmer Rupert Sanders will direct the feature from a script written by Jonathan Herman and Jamie Moss.

Ghost in the Shell, which will be distributed by Paramount, was widely accused of whitewashing after Johansson and other white actors were cast as the traditionally Japanese characters.

The Tokyo-born Fukushima joins a cast that also includes Michael Pitt, Juliette Binoche and Takeshi Kitano.

To American audiences, Fukushima is known for playing the female ninja Yukio in 2013's Wolverine opposite Hugh Jackman. Keeping in the superhero vein, she also took on the role of Katana on The CW's Arrow.
